Advice from Hamburg's old town

Make colour last longer

Colour and balayage don't lose their depth in a day, but wash by wash. We show you what protects the tone and how to tell when your roots need attention.

What keeps the tone going

  • Every hair wash costs colour pigment – washing twice instead of five times a week noticeably extends that fresh look.
  • Balayage grows out softly and needs touch-ups less often than a fully coloured root section.
  • Heat from hairdryers and straighteners opens the cuticle layer; a heat protectant before styling is the smallest effective step.
  • Copper-red and cool ash tones fade faster than natural shades – that's what pigmented at-home care is for.

Causes

Four reasons colour fades

Colour pigment sits within the hair fibre and is washed or bleached out a little every day. Four factors make the biggest difference here.

Washing

Warm water and heavily foaming shampoos cause the cuticle layer to open, letting pigment dissolve away with the lather. So the biggest lever isn't the product, but how often you wash and using lukewarm rather than hot water.

Sun

UV light bleaches out colour pigment and pulls especially cool tones towards brassy. In Hamburg summers this mainly affects the top layer and parting – exactly the section you see first.

Heat

Hairdryers on the highest setting, straighteners and curling irons work at well over 150 degrees. Without heat protection the fibre becomes porous, and a porous fibre holds pigment less well than a closed one.

Care products

Deep-cleansing shampoos, silicone-based treatments and products with a high alcohol content attack the colour. At your appointment we'll tell you which care products suit your tone and which break it down faster.

Everyday care

What protects the colour

None of these points call for a whole new routine – they're small changes that together make the weeks between two colour appointments more pleasant.

  • Wait 48 hours after your colour appointment before the first wash – that's how long the cuticle layer needs to close again.
  • Wash lukewarm and rinse with cool water instead of showering hot.
  • Massage shampoo into the roots only – the ends get cleaned anyway as you rinse.
  • Use a colour-preserving, sulphate-free shampoo and avoid deep-cleansing products between appointments.
  • Always apply a heat protectant before using a hairdryer, straightener or curling iron.
  • Cover your hair in strong sun or use a leave-in with UV filter.
  • Before swimming in chlorinated water, saturate the ends with a leave-in or oil, then rinse thoroughly afterwards.
  • Top up cool and red tones every two to three washes with a pigmented treatment.

After your appointment

The first two days matter most

48 hours
without washing your hair after the colour appointment

During this time the cuticle layer closes again and locks in the fresh pigment. Waiting this long means visibly more depth in the tone later on.

Intervals

When the regrowth is due

Hair grows an average of about one centimetre per month. How quickly this becomes noticeable depends less on speed than on the contrast between your natural hair and your chosen tone.

Full coverage

Colour right to the root

  • Covers grey hair completely and gives an even tone from root to tip
  • Result is fully predictable from day one
  • The regrowth line shows up sooner, because natural hair and colour sit directly against each other
  • Needs regular appointments, otherwise the boundary becomes a visible edge
Soft gradient

Balayage through the lengths

  • Grows out without a hard edge, because the lightening only starts below the root
  • Longer intervals between appointments possible
  • Does not cover grey hair at the root
  • Lightened sections need more moisture care and occasionally a toner against brassiness

How to tell it's time

  • A clearly visible line runs along the parting – this section always shows the regrowth first.
  • The temples look lighter or greyer than the top layer.
  • The tone only looks good under artificial light, but flat in daylight by the window.
  • Bleached lengths turn yellowish, cool tones lose their depth.
  • When tying your hair back, a visible colour step appears where the hair folds over.

The root touch-up appointment step by step

So you know what to expect: here's how a root touch-up colouring works with us, from the consultation at the window to the aftercare you take home with you.

For a root touch-up colouring, plan on around 90 minutes; for a balayage refresh, two to three hours. It's best to come with dry hair and without freshly applied styling products.

A hand lifts a section of hair at the parting, showing the transition from regrown natural tone to lightened length, with a bright salon and mirror in the background

We look at your hair dry and in daylight by the window: how far the regrowth has grown out, how the length compares in tone, how much grey needs covering. This tells us whether a simple regrowth colour is enough or whether the lengths also need a gloss refresh. We note down your formula so the next appointment goes smoothly without having to reassess from scratch.
