Colouring your roots yourself: the two mistakes we repair most

Touching up between appointments is fair enough. Two steps decide whether it goes well.

Nobody needs an appointment for two centimetres of regrowth. Most repairs that end up in our chair, however, come down to the same two mistakes.

Mistake one: pulling the colour through the lengths

Colour belongs on the roots, not in already coloured hair. Combing it through the lengths after ten minutes colours coloured hair again. The result is dark ends and a visible band that only washes out over months.

Mistake two: leaving it on too long

Longer does not mean more intense. After the stated time the reaction is complete; from then on only the developer keeps working against the fibre. Thirty minutes become forty-five, and the structure takes damage without the colour getting stronger.

  • Apply only to the regrown roots.
  • Treat the time on the box as an upper limit, not a guideline.
  • Do not work on more than two levels of lift yourself.

If something did go wrong, please do not colour over it straight away. Two wrong shades on top of each other are considerably harder to correct than one.
